Reflections on the First Fifty Years of the Space Age ...

Howard McCurdy

Public perceptions of spaceflight take the form of expectations shaped by imagination and popular culture.  Such expectations include the belief that space travel like aviation can be made cheap and accessible and the hope that Mars can be made fit for human habitation influence official policy.  What happens when those expectations encounter a conflicting reality?  Under such circumstances, advocates of space travel tend to redouble their efforts rather than abandon their beliefs.
